  1. Largely due to a fear of putting all my eggs in one basket, I set up the first part of my season so that I'd have two shots at a Kona slot. Attempt #1 was this past weekend's race- the Eagleman 70.3 in Cambridge, Maryland, one of only a few half Ironmans world-wide that qualify for Kona and the only one in the continental United States.
  2. As a lottery person, you need to do a 70.3 before you go to Kona. If I plan to go to Kona by qualifying, I would rather qualify via 70.3 so I'm not burnt out for Kona. Or at least do Arizona so you have a full years recovery. As far as I know, only 2 70.3 races have spots, California 70.3 and Hawaii 70.3.

World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) today announced that general entry registration for the third annual Ironman 70.3 Centrair Tokoname Japan will open on Jan. 31, 2012. With this being the only Ironman World Championship qualifier in the region, race organizers have added additional entries; however, as in previous years, a sell-out is anticipated within just a few hours.

Scheduled for June 24, 2012, Lixil Ironman 70.3 Centrair Tokoname Japan will be staged in and around the Centrair International Airport, providing easy access to the race for visitors travelling from across the globe with direct flights from Singapore, Frankfurt and Detroit. Athletes will begin the race with a point-to-point swim at Ise Bay in the Pacific Ocean. The 1.5-loop bike course will see some changes in 2012, leading to a smoother and faster route through Tokoname city. The final leg of the course features a spectator friendly one-loop run with athletes finishing on the beach.

The event is one of nearly 60 in the global Ironman 70.3 Series, offering 25 age group qualifying slots for the 2012 Ironman World Championship 70.3, to be held on Sept. 9, 2012, at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nev. The event date was moved earlier in the season to accommodate the addition of 30 coveted age group qualifying slots to the 2012 Ironman World Championship, scheduled for Oct. 13, 2012, in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i. These slots will give Asia-Pacific athletes additional opportunities to make it to the starting line on Ali’i Drive in Kona. Professional athletes will be competing for a prize purse of $15,000.

The Ironman Group announced changes Thursday to its allocations for competitors in the 2020 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona.

The primary change involved extending the qualification window from Aug. 23 to Aug. 30. With this tweak, three races — in Penticton, Canada, Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan and Vichy, France — will offer 60 qualification slots to the World Championship in addition to their existing slots for the 2021 World Championship.

More slots were added for athletes in the Kona Legacy Program, opening space for every eligible Legacy athlete on the waitlist. Qualifying athletes must have completed at least 12 full-distance Ironman-branded races and have never participated in the World Championship. The exact number of additional slots allocated for Legacy qualifiers has not been made public, and Ironman officials could not be reached for comment regarding new qualifiers.

“The Ironman Group, along with the Ironman Global Medical Advisory Board, has outlined a series of pragmatic and practical actions designed to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 or any other infectious agent to athletes and to members of our host communities,” Andrew Messick, Ironman Group President and CEO, said in a release earlier this year. “These steps will help athletes achieve their goals while allowing communities to secure the benefits of hosting mass participation sporting events.”
